Sabalenka Powers Through to Defeat Stephens in Australian Open 2025 Opener
Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1 and defending champion, began her 2025 Australian Open campaign in dominant fashion, securing a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sloane Stephens on Day 1 of the tournament. The match took place on the iconic Rod Laver Arena under the roof, which provided a fitting backdrop for Sabalenka’s impressive performance. Although the two-time defending champion wasn’t at her absolute best, the win marked her 15th consecutive victory at Melbourne Park, a remarkable streak dating back to 2022.
For Sabalenka, first-round matches at Grand Slams are always a test, even for a player of her stature. Despite facing a former US Open champion in Stephens, who has shown she can rise to the occasion at big tournaments, Sabalenka never really looked in trouble during the match. Her ability to shift gears and close out the match in straight sets was a testament to her mental strength and consistency.

Stephens began the match poorly, falling into a 0-4 hole in the first set, but showed some fight by breaking Sabalenka’s serve twice to get the score back to 4-3. However, Sabalenka regained her composure, broke back, and wrapped up the set 6-3 in just 38 minutes. Despite 13 unforced errors in the opener, Sabalenka managed to stay focused and tidy up her game, which was critical as she went on to dominate the second set. She broke Stephens' serve early and then again to take a 4-1 lead, and from there, it was smooth sailing to a 6-2 finish.
After the match, Sabalenka expressed her joy at being back in Melbourne, stating, “It was a tough match – always tough matches against her. It’s not like I played my best, but I’m happy I was able to close this match in straight sets. Melbourne Park feels like home.”
While the victory was crucial, Sabalenka was quick to reflect on her mental growth, noting how her improvement in staying calm during critical moments was a key factor in her success. "I think it's a big difference, compared to even like three years ago," Sabalenka said. "In that moment, I would get frustrated and probably would lose the first set. I'm really glad that I improved my mental toughness. I’m able to stay focused no matter what the score, what the situation is."
Sabalenka’s next challenge will come in the form of Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who won her first-round match against Briton Sonay Kartal. Sabalenka’s victory sets the stage for a promising defense of her Australian Open title, as she looks to claim her third consecutive trophy at Melbourne Park.
Despite a relatively straightforward win, Sabalenka’s victory was another example of her resilience and the mental toughness that has become her trademark in recent years. Fans will be watching closely as she continues her pursuit of tennis greatness in the 2025 Australian Open.
