Small Earthquake Near San Francisco Highlights Need for Preparedness
A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of San Francisco early Friday morning, January 10, 2025, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake was centered near the San Francisco Zoo, just three miles away, with a depth of five miles along the San Andreas Fault. While there were no reports of damage or injuries, this minor seismic event serves as a critical reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness.
Residents across the city and surrounding areas, from Marin County in the north to San Jose in the south, reported feeling the tremors. Two aftershocks followed shortly after, measuring 2.5 and 3.0 magnitudes. These quakes, though minor, were strong enough to be noticed by many locals going about their morning routines.

San Francisco Zoo staff were among those who felt the quake. Overnight security guard Robin Darrah described experiencing a momentary wobble in his legs before realizing it was an earthquake. Similarly, local resident Max Gardiner recounted how glasses in his kitchen began to rattle, prompting him to pause in surprise.
USGS scientist Robert de Groot emphasized that while smaller earthquakes like this one occur frequently in California—up to 50 daily—they often go unnoticed. This particular quake did not trigger a warning from the MyShake app, as its magnitude was below the threshold for alerts. Despite its small size, the incident is a timely call to action for residents to review their disaster preparedness plans.
Emergency experts recommend having an earthquake kit ready at all times, including essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, and important documents. The "drop, cover, and hold on" method remains the best immediate response during seismic activity.
Although no tsunami warnings were issued and the zoo confirmed no impact on its animals or facilities, Mayor Daniel Lurie underscored the city's commitment to safety. He activated response measures promptly to ensure public well-being.
