The Subaru WRX STI Makes a Powerful Comeback, But With a Twist
The Subaru WRX STI has officially returned—well, almost. After a three-year hiatus since the global model was discontinued in 2021, Subaru Tecnica International (STI) has unveiled the S210 edition at the Tokyo Auto Salon. This high-performance variant, however, is exclusive to Japan and comes with some notable distinctions that make it both exciting and controversial for enthusiasts.
The S210 carries the hallmark features of an STI model—enhanced power, sharper handling, and striking aesthetics—but it isn’t formally badged as a global WRX STI. Limited to just 500 units, the S210 builds on the Japanese-market WRX S4 with significant upgrades. It boasts a retuned 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four engine that delivers 221 kW (296 hp), a step up from the standard 202 kW in the base WRX. Yet, it falls short of the 241 kW offered by previous STI models like the S209. Torque remains at 375 Nm, with improvements driven by a reworked ECU, an advanced exhaust system, and redesigned intake components.

Breaking tradition, the S210 is the first STI in the S-series to feature Subaru’s CVT, known as the "Subaru Performance Transmission." While STI purists might lament the absence of a manual gearbox, Subaru promises enhanced control and responsiveness thanks to transmission-specific tuning.
On the chassis front, the S210 features 19-inch forged BBS wheels paired with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, Brembo brakes with six-piston front calipers, and adaptive dampers. Subaru has also added performance tweaks like a CVT fluid cooler, stiffened suspension components, and a front strut tower bar. These upgrades aim to sharpen handling while maintaining everyday usability.
Visually, the S210 commands attention. A carbon-fiber rear spoiler, blacked-out accents, and STI’s signature cherry red trim give it a dynamic stance. Inside, drivers are greeted with Recaro bucket seats, nappa leather, red stitching, and S210-specific badging for a premium, race-inspired cabin feel.
Though the S210 represents a thrilling evolution of the WRX STI lineage, its limited availability, lack of a manual transmission, and Japan-only release leave global fans yearning for more. Nevertheless, this exclusive model signals that Subaru is still committed to crafting high-performance sedans, even if the S210 isn’t the global STI revival many were hoping for. With its rarity and refined engineering, the S210 stands as a collector’s dream and a testament to Subaru’s performance legacy.
