Tottenham’s Struggles Continue as Newcastle Clinch Controversial Win
Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles deepened as they succumbed to a 1-2 defeat at home against Newcastle United, marking yet another frustrating day for manager Ange Postecoglou. With just one win in their last eight games, Spurs’ season appears to be slipping away, and their performance against Newcastle did little to lift spirits. On the other hand, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle extended their impressive run, securing their fifth consecutive Premier League victory and strengthening their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
Tottenham’s issues were clear from the start. Despite an early lead, with Dominic Solanke scoring just four minutes into the match after a header from Pedro Porro’s cross, their joy was short-lived. Less than two minutes after, a controversial handball decision shifted the momentum. Lucas Bergvall’s pass hit Joelinton’s hand, which led to a sequence of events ending in an equalizer for Newcastle. Bruno Guimarães played a pass to Anthony Gordon, who finished calmly to level the score at 1-1. Despite the ball being inadvertently handled by Joelinton, the referee ruled it wasn’t a direct handball in the buildup to the goal, much to Postecoglou’s dismay.

The match took another twist before the break. Tottenham’s defense was caught out again as Newcastle capitalized on a turnover in midfield. Jacob Murphy was a constant threat down the wing, and a cross from him, after a slight deflection off Spurs’ Radu Dragusin, found Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward scored once again, netting in his seventh consecutive league match, and putting Newcastle ahead 2-1.
Tottenham’s response after the break was commendable, with several chances coming their way. Pape Matar Sarr’s low strike forced a save from Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, and Brennan Johnson hit the post with the rebound. James Maddison also came close with a curling effort that just missed the target. Despite the pressure, Newcastle’s defense stood firm, and they successfully saw out the game, preserving their narrow advantage.
While Spurs showed some resilience in the second half, the defeat leaves them in a precarious position. With key injuries and a lack of depth, their defensive frailties were once again exposed. Newcastle, on the other hand, showed why they’re in such strong form, with an efficient performance that extends their push for a top-four finish. For Postecoglou and Spurs, though, the defeat highlights the depth of the challenges they face this season, with the team’s inconsistency continuing to haunt them. The loss to Newcastle serves as another reminder of how far Tottenham still have to go to reach their potential.
