Traffic Chaos Expected as 18 Breakdowns Per Minute Hit Roads Tomorrow
As millions of Brits return to work after the festive season, experts are warning of a significant traffic crisis tomorrow, January 2. With over 26,000 breakdowns expected across the UK, motorists face the potential of being caught in gridlock caused by a surge in vehicle issues. According to Green Flag, breakdowns will surge by 88%, and drivers should brace for an alarming 18 breakdowns every minute. This unprecedented rise is mainly attributed to cars that have been left unused over the Christmas period, many for as long as two weeks, causing an increase in problems like flat batteries, punctured tyres, and issues with starting vehicles.
The first day back at work after the holidays is often a stressful time for drivers, but this year, it’s expected to be particularly chaotic. Many vehicles that were inactive during the festive season will now face the consequences of prolonged idleness. Cold weather adds to the challenge, further straining batteries and engines that are already at risk due to lack of use. Mechanics across the Green Flag network are gearing up to tackle this huge surge, with some predicting that a response will be needed every three seconds.

Katie Lomas, Managing Director at Green Flag, emphasized the importance of taking preventative steps before heading back to work. She urged drivers to check their vehicles before hitting the road, especially after the holiday break. “That first working day back can be hectic as many people start their vehicles for the first time in a couple of weeks,” Lomas said. Flat batteries are likely to be the most common issue as vehicles that have been sitting idle for days struggle to start.
This expected rise in breakdowns won’t just affect January 2; the RAC is already anticipating similar issues on January 6 when many people return to their regular routine. Experts warn that the longer holiday period leads to a higher likelihood of “flat battery blues,” especially for second cars that are parked and neglected over the season. RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson highlights that this is the busiest time of the year for breakdown services, particularly due to the neglect of cars that haven’t been used in weeks.
To avoid being stranded, experts recommend taking action before the chaos hits. Whether it’s a short drive to keep the battery charged or a thorough vehicle check-up, these small steps can prevent major disruptions. For electric vehicle owners, it's crucial to ensure that the battery is not left uncharged for extended periods.
The combination of post-holiday vehicle issues and an influx of drivers returning to work creates the perfect storm for traffic gridlock. With breakdown services already preparing for a busy day, tomorrow is shaping up to be one of the most challenging days of the year for British roads.
