Trump Visits Hurricane-Ravaged North Carolina, Speaks on Disaster Management
Today, former President Donald Trump visited Asheville, North Carolina, to tour areas devastated by Hurricane Helene. Arriving at Asheville Regional Airport, he expressed his commitment to helping the people of North Carolina recover from the storm's aftermath. Trump emphasized his focus on local recovery efforts, remarking, “We want to take care of the people of North Carolina. It’s so interesting—everyone is talking about California, but I said, I’m not going to California until I stop in North Carolina. So here we are.”

During his visit, Trump sparked conversation about the role of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) in disaster response. Suggesting significant changes, he stated, “FEMA just hasn’t done the job. We’re looking at the whole concept of FEMA.” He proposed that state governments should take the lead in disaster response rather than relying on federal agencies. Trump argued that governors could handle emergencies more efficiently, as they are more familiar with the impacted regions. “To have a group of people come in from an area that don’t even know where they’re going to solve an immediate problem is something that never worked for me,” he added.
The visit highlighted broader themes, including his administration’s stance on federal and state responsibilities. Trump's remarks included his plan to streamline federal aid through alternative channels, bypassing FEMA, which he has criticized as inefficient. While he met with local leaders and Republican congressmen from affected areas, Trump also acknowledged the national focus on wildfires in California but reiterated his priority for North Carolina during this trip.
Trump’s visit comes at a time when his administration faces scrutiny over other policy changes, including immigration crackdowns and high-profile cabinet nominations. However, today’s focus remained on showing solidarity with the hurricane-hit state and exploring ways to improve disaster management strategies. The former president’s stop in North Carolina underscores his ongoing engagement in national and local issues even after leaving office.
