Fights Break Out at Man United vs. Rangers Europa Clash Leading to Dozens of Arrests
In a tense and dramatic Europa League clash between Manchester United and Rangers at Old Trafford, football took a backseat to unfortunate incidents of violence. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that 39 arrests were made in connection with the game, with 26 stemming from violent disorder on a city-centre street. This followed the surge of traveling Rangers fans—around 4,000 with official away tickets and many more unofficially in attendance—contributing to chaotic scenes both outside and within the stadium.
Inside Old Trafford, scuffles erupted after some Rangers fans managed to secure tickets in the home section despite Manchester United's measures to restrict ticket sales to pre-registered individuals. The Premier League club has promised a thorough investigation, vowing the strictest penalties against the ticket holders who facilitated this breach.

The incidents outside the stadium began about two hours before the match. Arrests included charges of violent disorder, drug offenses, common assault, ticket forgery, and public order violations such as "tragedy chanting" targeting rival clubs’ past misfortunes. A steward was also assaulted in the melee, adding another troubling layer to the evening.
Despite the unrest, Greater Manchester Police commended the majority of fans for their good behavior, emphasizing that most were able to enjoy the match safely. Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes noted that the issues arose from isolated groups rather than the wider fan base.
The game itself was a nail-biter, with Manchester United clinching a 2-1 victory through a dramatic late goal by Bruno Fernandes after Cyriel Dessers had temporarily drawn Rangers level. Yet, the football was overshadowed by the clashes, a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance and better crowd control at such high-profile events.
As both clubs reflect on the chaos, Manchester United has reiterated its commitment to addressing the unauthorized sale of tickets, citing its implementation of in-app digital ticketing. Rangers, meanwhile, has yet to provide an official comment on the incidents.
