Washington Mardi Gras 2025 Shines Spotlight on Veterans and Military Heroes

This year, the 76th Washington Mardi Gras, a cherished Louisiana tradition, takes a deeply meaningful turn as it honors veterans and active-duty military members. Led by King Rico Alvendia, a decorated Iraq War veteran and New Orleans attorney, this annual celebration is more than a vibrant social event—it’s a platform to give back and highlight the sacrifices of those who serve our country.

King Alvendia, chosen by U.S. Representative Troy Carter, is making history by centering the event on supporting military heroes. Alvendia’s selected charity, the Mars Hero Fund, is at the heart of this year’s festivities. This nonprofit provides financial aid to veterans and active-duty military families in times of crisis. Since its inception, it has offered vital support to thousands of military families. By weaving this cause into Washington Mardi Gras, Alvendia aims to raise awareness and funds while bringing a deeper sense of purpose to the revelry.

The weekend-long celebration kicked off at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where Louisiana's business leaders, elected officials, and congressional members gathered for a series of events, ranging from networking luncheons to invitation-only soirées. Despite a snowstorm delaying some arrivals, the spirit of Mardi Gras was in full swing by Friday, with festivities ramping up to the grand ball on Saturday.

The members-only ball, the pinnacle of the celebration, was a spectacle of Louisiana tradition, featuring costumes, masks, marching bands, and callout dances. But this year, the excitement was coupled with gratitude for those who have served. The Legion of Mars krewe, which Alvendia captains, played a key role in this year’s festivities. Founded by combat veterans, the krewe not only raises funds but also fosters camaraderie among veterans and first responders. Their dedication extends beyond Mardi Gras, hosting events like golf tournaments, barbecues, and parades that celebrate service and sacrifice.

For attendees, this year’s Washington Mardi Gras was a poignant reminder of the power of community. It demonstrated how traditions can evolve to honor those who dedicate their lives to protecting ours. As Alvendia aptly stated, the event was “a platform to honor the military,” ensuring that the joyous celebration carried a message of gratitude and support for the heroes among us.
