Winter Storm Warning: Snow, Sleet, and Freezing Rain to Impact Alabama

Good morning, Alabama! As we brace for the impact of a significant winter storm, here’s the latest update on what to expect. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for northern and central parts of the state, effective from late Thursday night through Saturday morning. Residents across the region should prepare for a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain that could bring hazardous conditions.

The storm is expected to begin shortly after midnight tonight, spreading across the state through Friday morning. Northern counties, including Cullman, Blount, and Madison, are likely to see the heaviest snowfall, with accumulations between 2 to 4 inches in some areas, especially near the Tennessee border. Meanwhile, central counties, including Birmingham, may experience up to an inch of sleet and snow, transitioning to cold rain as temperatures rise. Southern areas are under a Winter Weather Advisory , anticipating lighter impacts with accumulations less than an inch.

Travel conditions are a major concern, particularly along and north of Highway 278, where icy roads and slick bridges could make driving dangerous or impossible. If you can avoid travel during this time, please do so for your safety. Power outages and tree damage are also possible in areas where freezing rain creates a glaze of ice.

Timing is everything with this system. The coldest air will support snow and sleet in the early morning hours on Friday, but a push of warmer air may transition much of the precipitation to rain by midday in central Alabama. For northern areas, however, snow could persist longer, maintaining hazardous conditions well into Friday afternoon.

Saturday morning may bring lingering icy patches, but conditions should clear as we move into the weekend. By Sunday, we expect dry weather with highs in the 40s, though areas with snow cover may see lows dipping into the teens overnight.

Stay tuned to your local weather stations, apps, and emergency notifications for the latest updates. As we navigate this winter storm together, please take care, stay warm, and be prepared.
