Women's Ashes 2025: England Fights Back as Australia Dominates in MCG Test
The Women's Ashes Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is heating up, and Day 3 has delivered a mix of resilience, dominance, and a battle of tactics between England and Australia. The Australians put themselves in the driver's seat with a commanding first-innings total of 440, but England has shown some fight as they attempt to stay in the contest.
Starting the day with their first innings, Australia lost their last five wickets for just nine runs, thanks to a fantastic effort from England's Sophie Ecclestone. The left-arm spinner finished with figures of 5-143, showcasing her skill and determination. However, by that point, Australia had already posted a mammoth total, with standout performances from Beth Mooney (106) and Annabel Sutherland (163). Mooney’s century made history, as she became the first Australian woman to score a hundred in all three formats of the game.

England’s response with the bat was far from ideal. They struggled against Australia’s disciplined bowling attack and were bundled out for just 170. Nat Sciver-Brunt was the lone warrior, top-scoring with a hard-fought 51, but there was little support from the rest of the lineup. Alana King proved to be England’s biggest hurdle, taking four wickets for just 45 runs. Darcie Brown and Kim Garth also chipped in with two wickets each, ensuring Australia held a commanding first-innings lead of 270 runs.
Asked to follow on, England knew they needed a strong response in their second innings. Openers Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight provided some stability, guiding England to 71-1 at stumps. Beaumont, in particular, looked confident, remaining unbeaten on 39. Knight stood firm alongside her on 26*, but England still trails by 199 runs with nine wickets in hand. They face an uphill battle heading into Day 4, with Australia’s spinners, especially King and Ash Gardner, likely to play a crucial role in deciding the outcome.
While England has shown glimpses of fight, Australia remains firmly in control. The final day promises to be an intense battle—will England stage a dramatic comeback, or will Australia wrap up a dominant victory? Stay tuned as the Women's Ashes drama unfolds at the MCG!
