Alan Shearer Slams Tottenham's Lack of Fight After FA Cup Exit

Shearer, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, called out Son and other senior players for their underwhelming performance. He expected more from the experienced players, including Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, but instead saw a team lacking confidence, fight, and leadership. He pointed to Son’s missed first-half chance—one that a more confident version of the forward would have buried—as a key moment in the game. According to Shearer, the younger players have shown more energy and commitment in recent months, which is both impressive and concerning given the lack of senior leadership.
This loss marks another low point for Spurs, who have now won just one of their last eight Premier League games and have been knocked out of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the span of a week. The pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou is mounting, with reports suggesting some figures within the club are already considering a change in leadership.
Micah Richards, another pundit, echoed Shearer’s sentiments, highlighting Son’s visible lack of confidence. He noted that in previous seasons, Son would have instinctively taken a shot rather than hesitating or looking to pass. Right now, though, he seems unsure of himself, a reflection of the entire Tottenham squad’s struggles.
The result against Aston Villa was particularly frustrating for Spurs fans, who voiced their anger toward chairman Daniel Levy during the match. Chants of "We want Levy out" rang loud and clear from the away section, underscoring the growing discontent among supporters. With Spurs sitting in 14th place in the Premier League table, their hopes of securing silverware now rest solely on the Europa League—a competition they must take seriously if they want to salvage what has been a difficult season.
At this point, Tottenham’s issues go beyond just one game. They lack leadership on the pitch, their form is dismal, and confidence is at an all-time low.
