Browns Release Nyheim Hines After Injury-Plagued Stint

The Cleveland Browns have officially parted ways with running back Nyheim Hines, marking the end of a challenging chapter in his career. The move comes after Hines was unable to play a single snap for the team following a devastating ACL injury that sidelined him for the entire 2023 season.

Hines, who signed a one-year deal with the Browns in March 2024, had been working his way back from the injury but never made it to the active roster. Despite being designated to return to practice in October, the Browns ultimately chose not to activate him before his 21-day practice window expired. With that, his time in Cleveland has now come to an end.

For Hines, the past couple of years have been filled with setbacks. The last time he played in an NFL game was back on January 22, 2023, during the Buffalo Bills' playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. His career took an unfortunate turn when he suffered a freak knee injury in a jet skiing accident in July 2023, which forced him to miss the entire 2023 season.

Originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Hines made a name for himself as a dynamic playmaker. Over his career, he has accumulated 1,205 rushing yards, 1,725 receiving yards, and 18 total touchdowns from scrimmage. But perhaps his biggest impact came as a return specialist, where he racked up 1,832 return yards and four touchdowns, including two electrifying kickoff returns for scores in 2022 while playing for Buffalo.

The Browns took a chance on Hines in free agency, hoping he could provide depth and versatility to their offense. However, with lingering health concerns and no on-field contributions, the team ultimately decided to move on. As for what’s next, Hines will now look for a fresh start elsewhere, but with two consecutive seasons lost to injury, teams may be hesitant to take a risk on the once-explosive playmaker.

It’s an unfortunate turn for a player who once flashed so much potential, but as we’ve seen in the NFL, comebacks are always possible. Whether Hines gets another opportunity remains to be seen, but for now, his time with the Browns is officially over.
