Dangerous Winter Storm Brings Ice and Snow to Philadelphia Region
Hey everyone, if you're heading out in the next couple of days, be prepared—because winter is about to hit us hard! A strong storm system is moving into the Philadelphia region, bringing a messy mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. If you’re in the suburbs north and west of the city, especially around Berks County, the Lehigh Valley, or parts of South Jersey, things are going to get slippery.
The storm is set to arrive late Wednesday night, February 5, and will last through Thursday morning, February 6. A First Alert has been issued from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 1 p.m. Thursday , meaning hazardous travel conditions and possible school delays. Initially, we’ll see some light snow showers, but as the night goes on and temperatures fluctuate, expect that to turn into sleet and freezing rain. That’s the real concern —even a thin layer of ice can make roads incredibly dangerous.

For folks along the I-95 corridor and south , the changeover to rain will happen a bit quicker, but not before some areas get a light glaze of ice. The biggest impact? Roads will be slick, especially during the morning commute. If you need to drive, take it slow and be extra careful. We could see up to a quarter inch of ice accumulation in the colder areas, and while snow totals will be low—less than an inch for most—the ice is the real threat.
By late Thursday morning, temperatures will start rising above freezing, which should help improve conditions. But don’t get too comfortable—this isn’t the only storm we’re dealing with this week. Another winter system is expected on Saturday , bringing another round of snow and ice before turning into rain by the evening.
For now, just be prepared —give yourself extra time in the morning, watch out for black ice, and stay updated on the latest weather alerts. If you don’t have to go out early Thursday, it might be best to stay in and wait for conditions to improve. And keep that snow gear handy—next week could bring even more wintry weather. Stay safe out there!
