Delta Flight Crashes at Toronto Pearson Airport, Leaving Passengers Suspended in Chaos

On the afternoon of February 17, 2025, a harrowing incident unfolded at Toronto Pearson International Airport when a Delta Air Lines flight, traveling from Minneapolis, crashed while attempting to land. The crash occurred amid strong winds and snow as the aircraft, carrying 80 passengers and crew, was preparing to touch down. The plane flipped upside down after the crash, leaving the fuselage on its roof, engulfed in smoke and fire. Despite the terrifying scene, fortunately, all 80 people onboard survived, with 18 sustaining injuries, though none were reported to be life-threatening.

Witnesses described the moments inside the plane as utterly chaotic. John Nelson, one of the passengers, recalled being “hanging like bats,” as the plane crashed and flipped. As the aircraft hit the runway, the force of the impact sent the plane spiraling, triggering a large fireball and scattering debris across the tarmac. "It felt like the plane just turned sideways, and then suddenly we were upside down," said Peter Koukov, another passenger on the flight. The confusion and panic were palpable, with passengers scrambling to release their seatbelts and evacuate the plane.

Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene, dousing the aircraft with fire retardant foam as they worked to contain the fire. Passengers were evacuated from the plane’s doors, some leaping several feet to the cold ground, aided by flight attendants urging everyone to leave their personal belongings behind. Despite the gravity of the situation, most of the evacuees appeared to have only minor injuries, though the emotional toll was evident. Peter Carlson, another passenger, said, "Everyone on the plane became very close, helping one another, consoling each other... It was a powerful moment."

The crash temporarily shut down all five runways at Canada’s busiest airport, causing significant disruptions with over 200 flights canceled and others diverted to nearby airports. The chaotic aftermath was compounded by the sight of luggage scattered across terminals, a visible sign of the airport’s scramble to regain normalcy.

As investigators now work to determine the cause of the crash, questions linger about the role of the weather, including gusty winds and snow, in the accident. It is still unclear exactly how the aircraft was upended during its landing. With authorities from both the United States and Canada involved in the investigation, the world watches closely as answers unfold. The Delta flight incident marks yet another major crash in North America in recent weeks, raising further concerns about flight safety and raising questions about potential improvements to prevent such harrowing events in the future.
