Elon Musk Pushes Back on 'Hostile Takeover' Claims in White House Appearance

Elon Musk made a surprise visit to the White House, standing beside President Donald Trump in the Oval Office to address concerns about his role in reshaping the federal government. Musk, now at the helm of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), dismissed allegations of a "hostile takeover" and defended the administration’s aggressive cost-cutting measures.

Speaking to reporters, Musk emphasized that his efforts to downsize the government are based on "common sense," not radical ideology. "The people voted for major reform, and that’s exactly what they’re going to get," he stated. Despite legal challenges and criticism from Democratic lawmakers, Musk insisted that these changes are necessary for the financial stability of the country. He further argued that an "unelected, unconstitutional fourth branch of government" has amassed too much power over time—referring to federal employees who remain in place regardless of election results.

Dressed in a black "Make America Great Again" cap, Musk maintained a casual yet firm stance while addressing the media. He even had his young son, X Æ A-Xii, perched on his shoulders for part of the press event, adding an unusual touch to an already unconventional moment.

The billionaire entrepreneur acknowledged scrutiny over his approach but remained confident in his mission. "I fully expect to be criticized—it's not like I think I can just do whatever I want," he admitted. However, critics argue that Musk's influence within the Trump administration is problematic, especially given his extensive business interests, including Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter). Some lawmakers have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, though Musk and Trump dismissed these claims, asserting that transparency measures are in place.

As part of the executive order signed by Trump, DOGE now has expanded authority to implement drastic reductions in the federal workforce. The order instructs agencies to comply with DOGE's directives, including a policy that allows hiring only one new employee for every four who leave.

Public opinion appears divided on Musk’s role. A recent poll indicates that while most Americans support government efficiency, there are concerns about the extent of Musk’s power. Republicans largely back the initiative, seeing it as a long-overdue correction of government overreach, while Democrats warn of deep repercussions for essential public services and international aid.

With legal battles looming and mounting opposition, Musk and Trump face an uphill battle in their effort to reshape the federal government. But for now, Musk remains undeterred, insisting that the changes are "not optional" but "essential for America’s solvency."
