European Leaders Urgently Convene Over Ukraine Crisis Amid US-Russia Talks
European leaders are scrambling to respond to a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape as former US President Donald Trump pushes ahead with peace talks between the US and Russia—leaving Europe largely on the sidelines. In response, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an emergency summit in Paris, with key European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, set to attend.
The urgency of this meeting stems from mounting concerns that Trump’s unilateral approach could weaken Europe’s influence in shaping Ukraine’s future. Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, made it clear that European leaders would be consulted but not included in direct negotiations between the US and Russia. Meanwhile, Trump’s approach has reignited memories of his past dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly their closed-door meeting in Helsinki in 2018.
