Key Takeaways from Modi-Trump Talks – Trade, Defence, and Diplomacy
The recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump was a significant moment in global politics. Modi’s first visit to Washington during Trump’s second term was focused on business and diplomacy, marking a crucial phase in U.S.-India relations. While the discussions lacked the grandeur of a state visit, they resulted in key agreements on trade, defence, and energy.
One of the major highlights was Trump’s announcement of expanded military sales to India, including the potential sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets. The U.S. also committed to increasing oil and gas exports to India, a move aimed at reducing the trade deficit between the two nations. Additionally, both leaders agreed to negotiate a trade deal and finalize a new defence framework.
A major topic of discussion was trade tariffs. Trump has been pushing for reciprocal tariffs, meaning that U.S. trade partners, including India, should match duties on American goods. India, which enjoys a trade surplus with the U.S., had already pre-emptively lowered its average tariff rate from 13% to 11%. While some experts believe this could help India avoid steep U.S. tariffs, others warn that Trump’s strategy might still lead to new trade restrictions, including on non-tariff barriers and government procurement rules.

Another key development was the agreement to double U.S.-India trade to $500 billion by 2030. This ambitious goal includes improving market access, reducing tariffs, and integrating supply chains. However, experts remain uncertain about the nature of the trade agreement—whether it will be a full free trade deal or a more limited tariff reduction agreement.
Defence ties between the two nations also took a major step forward. Over the years, India’s defence trade with the U.S. has grown from almost nothing to over $20 billion. Trump’s commitment to increasing military equipment sales further solidifies this relationship. However, challenges remain, as India has traditionally relied on Russian military supplies and the F-35 deal comes with high maintenance costs and bureaucratic hurdles.
On the tech front, Modi met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk to discuss artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. However, Tesla’s entry into the Indian market remains uncertain due to regulatory issues and disagreements over import duties.
In a rare move, Modi also took part in a joint press conference with Trump, answering questions on immigration and corruption allegations related to the Adani Group. He reaffirmed India’s willingness to take back illegal Indian migrants from the U.S., aligning with Trump’s strict immigration policies.
Overall, the meeting reinforced the strong personal rapport between Modi and Trump but also highlighted the challenges ahead. While trade and defence agreements signal deeper cooperation, India must navigate the complexities of U.S. trade policies and geopolitical dynamics to fully capitalize on this evolving partnership.
