Hazardous Driving Conditions Expected in Massachusetts with Snow and Ice on Thursday
If you're in Massachusetts today, you'll want to be extra cautious on the roads. A fast-moving storm is making its way across the region, bringing a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain that could create hazardous driving conditions throughout the day.
StormTeam 5 has declared an Impact Weather Day for Thursday, with snow expected to begin falling around 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., right as many of us are heading out for the morning commute. The snow will arrive in heavy bursts, significantly reducing visibility and creating slippery roads. According to Chief Meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon, travel will be particularly dangerous until midday, with conditions continuing to worsen until around noon when the snow begins to change to sleet and freezing rain.

The snow accumulation won’t last long. You can expect between 1 to 3 inches of snow before the mix of sleet and freezing rain starts to take over. This transition will occur quickly, meaning that roads that were previously covered in snow will soon be coated with ice, making driving even more treacherous. In the late morning and early afternoon, roads could become dangerously slick, especially in untreated areas.
If you live near the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border, you may see slightly more snow, with totals potentially reaching 4 inches in some areas. The worst conditions are expected during lunchtime, just as many schools are letting out. This is why dozens of schools across Massachusetts have already decided to close for the day. Many families will be staying home, and if you have any travel plans, it's best to reschedule if possible.
By the time the evening commute rolls around, the storm should begin tapering off, with the snow and icy mix moving out of the area between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. But even though the precipitation will end, the roads will still be slippery, so keep that in mind if you’re heading out in the evening.
Looking ahead, Friday will bring a brief break in the weather with sunshine and temperatures near 40 degrees, which will help melt some of the snow. However, don’t get too comfortable. Another round of wintry weather is expected to hit Saturday night through Sunday morning, bringing more snow and possibly rain in some areas. This could be another storm that dumps significant snow, especially for areas north of Boston, so make sure to stay updated as we head into the weekend.
In the meantime, stay safe out there today! Avoid unnecessary travel if you can, and if you must drive, be prepared for slick roads and reduced visibility. The combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is sure to cause some disruptions, so take it slow and stay alert!
