It’s heartbreaking news for the boxing world—John Cooney, the talented Irish super-featherweight boxer, has passed away at just 28 years old. The tragic news comes a week after he sustained a severe injury during his title defense fight in Belfast.

Cooney was up against Welsh fighter Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall last Saturday when the bout was stopped in the ninth round. Shortly after, he was rushed to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, where doctors discovered he had suffered an intracranial hemorrhage. He underwent emergency surgery, but despite fighting for his life over the past week, he sadly didn’t make it.

His promoter, Mark Dunlop, shared the devastating announcement on behalf of the Cooney family, expressing their deep sorrow. “It is with complete devastation that we have to announce that after a week of battling for his life, John Cooney has sadly passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Cooney and his fiancée Emmaleen would like to thank the staff at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital who worked tirelessly to save John’s life and everyone who sent messages of support and prayers.”

Cooney was a rising star in Irish boxing. He won the Celtic super-featherweight title in November 2023 with a stunning first-round victory over Liam Gaynor in Dublin. Unfortunately, he had to take a year off due to a hand injury before making a successful return in October 2024. This latest fight was his first title defense, but no one could have predicted how tragically it would end.

Tributes have poured in from the boxing community and beyond. Former world champion Barry McGuigan called it “terrifying” that something like this could happen to such a young and promising athlete. Olympic medalist Michael Conlan described it as a “very sad day for the Irish boxing community,” while Conrad Cummings wrote, “John Cooney, the warrior, gave up his fight. I can’t begin to imagine the pain his fiancée and family are feeling right now.”

It’s a stark reminder of the risks boxers take every time they step into the ring. John “The Kid” Cooney was more than just a fighter—he was a beloved son, brother, and partner. His loss is deeply felt, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and supported him.

Rest in peace, champ.
