John Fleck Rushed to Hospital Before Chesterfield vs Doncaster Kickoff
Just before Chesterfield’s League Two clash with Doncaster Rovers, a concerning moment unfolded at the SMH Group Stadium. Former Sheffield United and Rangers midfielder John Fleck, who was set to be on the bench for Chesterfield, was unexpectedly taken ill during the pre-match warm-up. Medical teams quickly attended to the 33-year-old, and he was soon rushed to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

The incident caused a delay to the game, pushing the kickoff back by 10 minutes. Chesterfield FC later confirmed the situation on social media, stating, "We can confirm that John Fleck has been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure after being taken ill during the pre-match warm-up." In response to Fleck’s absence, Michael Jacobs was brought in to replace him among the substitutes.
For those who have followed Fleck’s career, this is a worrying development. The Scottish midfielder has had his fair share of injury troubles in recent years. After leaving Sheffield United, he had a brief spell with Blackburn Rovers but suffered a shin injury just 17 minutes into his debut, which required surgery. Since joining Chesterfield in September 2023 as a free agent, he has struggled for game time, making just a handful of appearances this season.
Adding to the drama of the evening, the game faced a second delay just minutes after kickoff when a spectator in the crowd also became unwell, leading to another 12-minute pause as medical staff attended to the situation.
Despite the unsettling events, the match eventually proceeded. However, Fleck’s sudden illness raises questions about his health and whether he will be able to return to action anytime soon. Fans and former teammates have expressed their concern, hoping for positive news from the hospital regarding his condition.
For now, all thoughts are with John Fleck, wishing him a speedy recovery.
