Lakers Strengthen Frontcourt by Trading for Mark Williams
In a major move to bolster their frontcourt, the Los Angeles Lakers have traded for center Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets. This trade, reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, comes just days after the Lakers made waves by acquiring superstar Luka Dončić. The Lakers are clearly making a push to secure a deeper, more dynamic roster, especially with the loss of All-NBA forward Anthony Davis, who was sent to Dallas as part of the Dončić trade.
In exchange for Williams, the Lakers sent rookie guard Dalton Knecht, veteran forward Cam Reddish, and future picks, including a 2031 unprotected first-round pick and a 2030 pick swap, to the Hornets. While the Hornets are in full rebuild mode, they continue to build up their draft assets. This trade adds more firepower to their collection, as they now hold several future first-round picks from various teams, including Miami, Dallas, and now Los Angeles.

For the Lakers, the acquisition of the 23-year-old Williams is seen as a smart move. Standing at 7 feet tall, Williams gives the Lakers the size they’ve been lacking in the frontcourt. Though he was sidelined earlier this season, Williams has had an impressive year with the Hornets, averaging 16 points and 9.8 rebounds in his last 22 games. His athleticism, coupled with his knack for finishing around the rim (he recorded 60 dunks during that span), should provide the Lakers with a much-needed interior presence.
Williams was drafted 15th overall by Charlotte in 2022, after a standout career at IMG Academy. His addition to the Lakers gives them a promising young big man who can contribute both offensively and defensively. This is especially important for the Lakers, who have struggled with frontcourt depth, especially in the wake of Davis's departure. The trade gives the Lakers another weapon in their rotation, potentially forming a strong partnership with their other stars, including Dončić.
On the flip side, the Hornets are continuing their rebuild and stockpiling valuable draft capital. By acquiring Knecht, a promising rookie who averaged 9.4 points per game for the Lakers, along with the draft picks, Charlotte is positioning itself to build for the future. Knecht, known for his shooting ability with a 35.8% three-point shooting clip, adds a versatile piece to their young core. With their stacked collection of future picks, including several high-potential ones from Miami and Dallas, the Hornets are shaping up to be a serious player in future drafts.
This trade is just the latest in what has been an exciting season for the Lakers, who are making moves to remain competitive in the stacked Western Conference. With Williams now in the mix, the Lakers have added much-needed size and youth to their roster, making them an even more formidable force going forward.
