Lower Mainland Snowstorm Causes School Closures Across the Region
A massive snowstorm over the weekend has led to widespread school closures across the Lower Mainland, leaving students with an unexpected day off. As districts assessed the road conditions early Monday morning, several decided it was unsafe to operate, forcing closures in multiple areas.
Langley, Abbotsford, and Mission school districts were among the first to announce closures due to treacherous roads and heavy snowfall. Public schools in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows followed suit, while Chilliwack schools remained open, though bus services were running. Meanwhile, students in North Vancouver, Vancouver, Surrey, and Burnaby were expected to attend classes as usual.

Post-secondary institutions also had to make tough calls. Capilano University kept its Lonsdale, kálax-ay, and Squamish campuses open, but its main North Vancouver campus remained closed. The University of British Columbia canceled all in-person learning activities at its main campus. Kwantlen Polytechnic University shut down its Langley and Cloverdale campuses until at least noon, while its other locations stayed open. The University of the Fraser Valley and BCIT both announced full closures for the day. Simon Fraser University and Langara, however, remained open.
Several private schools, including Valley Christian School in Langley and Pacific Academy in Surrey, also announced closures due to the snowfall.
Beyond school shutdowns, the storm has made commuting difficult, with parts of Highway 1 in Langley, Abbotsford, and Chilliwack covered in snow and multiple vehicles ending up in ditches. Officials are urging drivers to exercise caution and only travel if necessary.
