Major Snowstorm Set to Hit Quebec This Week
Alright, folks, buckle up because winter is about to show its true colors in Quebec! After a relatively calm start to the week, things are about to take a dramatic turn as a powerful snowstorm makes its way into the province. This storm, expected to hit on Thursday, could be the biggest one we've seen this winter, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and challenging travel conditions.
According to Environment Canada meteorologist Gina Ressler, this system is rolling in straight from Texas, set to arrive in southern Quebec early Thursday morning before making its way east. The storm will track along the St. Lawrence River, reaching Gaspésie by Friday morning. Snowfall amounts are expected to range between 15 and 30 centimeters, with some areas possibly seeing even more.

Regions like Outaouais, the Laurentides, Lanaudière, and Mauricie are in for the heaviest snow, potentially exceeding 30 centimeters in accumulation. However, there’s still some uncertainty about the storm’s exact path. If it shifts slightly north, areas like Montreal and Estrie could see a mix of snow, freezing rain, and rain instead of pure snowfall. But if it tracks further south, major cities like Montreal, Quebec City, and Gatineau could be hit with the full force of the snowstorm.
Along with the heavy snowfall, strong winds and plummeting temperatures will add to the chaos. Gusts could reach up to 80 km/h, making visibility poor and roads treacherous. Ressler warns that travel on Thursday will be difficult, advising people to consider working from home if possible.
Montreal, in particular, is bracing for what could be a record-breaking snow event for the season. The city has seen below-average snowfall this winter, with the highest single snowfall so far being just 9 centimeters. But that’s about to change in a big way.
And if you think this is the last of it, think again—forecasters are already eyeing another potential storm for the weekend. While details are still uncertain, Quebec appears to be entering a very active weather pattern, meaning back-to-back snow events could be on the horizon.
So, if you haven’t already, now’s the time to get your winter gear ready. Stock up on essentials, prepare for possible delays, and be extra cautious if you need to be on the roads. This storm is shaping up to be a serious one, and it’s best to be prepared for whatever winter throws our way. Stay safe out there!
