Major Snowstorm Set to Hit Newfoundland—Blizzard Conditions Expected
Hey everyone, if you haven’t already heard, a major winter storm is heading toward Newfoundland this weekend, and it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest snowfalls of the season. This storm has the potential to bring blizzard conditions, with heavy snowfall and powerful wind gusts expected to cause significant disruptions.
Right now, a winter storm watch is in effect for St. John’s, and it’s strongly advised to stay updated on weather alerts before heading out. The system is expected to move in on Sunday, bringing snow across the Maritimes early in the day before intensifying as it approaches Newfoundland. Some areas, especially in the eastern parts of the island, could see more than 30 cm of snow by Monday morning.

The real concern is the combination of heavy snow and strong winds. Wind gusts are expected to reach between 80-100 km/h across southeastern Newfoundland, especially around the Avalon Peninsula. At the height of the storm, snowfall rates could hit 3-5 cm per hour, making travel extremely difficult. With snow blowing and drifting, visibility will be significantly reduced, creating near-whiteout conditions at times. If you don’t absolutely have to travel, it’s best to stay off the roads.
For those in the Burin Peninsula, snowfall totals are expected to reach between 15-30 cm, while St. John’s and surrounding areas could see anywhere from 20-35 cm by the time the storm winds down on Monday. The strongest winds and heaviest snowfall are expected to peak Sunday night into early Monday morning.
This system is also rapidly intensifying, meeting the criteria for what meteorologists call a "weather bomb," meaning the pressure is dropping quickly, making the storm even more powerful. For those in coastal areas, the high winds combined with heavy snowfall will likely create hazardous conditions, so be prepared for potential power outages and delays.
If you do need to go out, make sure to inform someone about your plans, carry an emergency kit, and have your phone fully charged. This storm is shaping up to be a significant one, so take precautions and stay safe. We’ll keep you updated as the system moves in. Stay warm, and if you can, enjoy the snow from the comfort of home!
