Major Winter Storm Warning for Metro Detroit – What You Need to Know

Alright, Metro Detroit, we’ve got a serious winter storm heading our way, and it’s time to prepare. The National Weather Service has officially issued a Winter Storm Warning for several counties, including Wayne, Monroe, Macomb, St. Clair, and Sanilac. This warning takes effect at midnight tonight (12 a.m. Sunday, February 16, 2025) and will last until 4 p.m. Sunday . If you’re in other parts of the Metro Detroit area, you’re likely under a Winter Weather Advisory during the same time.

So, what are we looking at? Heavy snowfall is expected, with totals ranging from 4 to 8 inches in the warning area. Some locations could see even higher accumulations by the time the storm moves out Sunday evening. In areas under the advisory, expect around 3 to 6 inches of snow. And keep in mind, this is on top of the 1 to 3 inches we already got on Saturday.

Now, it’s not just the snow that’s going to make things tricky— strong winds are also in the mix. Gusts could reach 30 to 35 mph , which means blowing and drifting snow will be an issue, making travel hazardous. Visibility could drop quickly, and roads—especially bridges and overpasses—are likely to be slick and dangerous .

If you can avoid traveling , do it. But if you absolutely must be on the road, take extreme caution. Slow down, allow extra time, and increase your following distance. Sudden braking or accelerating could lead to accidents, so be mindful, especially on hills and turns.

Looking ahead, the snow will taper off by late Sunday , but we’re not out of the woods yet. An Arctic blast is coming early next week , bringing temperatures in the teens , and when you factor in the wind chills, we could be looking at below-zero conditions Monday and Tuesday.

So, Metro Detroit, get your shovels and snow blowers ready, stock up on essentials, and stay safe. If you haven’t already, make sure to check for school closings, weather alerts, and travel updates throughout the weekend. We’ll be keeping an eye on this system, so stay tuned for more updates!
