Man United Edge Leicester in Controversial FA Cup Thriller
What a night of football at Old Trafford! Manchester United pulled off a dramatic 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the FA Cup, but the result didn’t come without controversy. Ruud van Nistelrooy, Leicester’s manager and former United legend, was left fuming as his side fell victim to what he called "offside time" instead of "Fergie time."
The match was on a knife-edge, with Leicester putting in a strong performance despite their recent struggles. They struck first, thanks to Bobby De Cordova-Reid, who capitalized on a defensive lapse in the first half. United, as they have so often this season, started sluggishly, struggling to create meaningful chances.

But the game turned in the second half. Ruben Amorim introduced Alejandro Garnacho, and the young Argentine immediately injected some much-needed energy. His pace and direct play troubled Leicester's backline, and he played a crucial role in United’s equalizer, sending in a dangerous cross that eventually led to Joshua Zirkzee’s goal.
Then came the moment that sparked all the controversy. Deep into stoppage time, Bruno Fernandes whipped in a free-kick, and Harry Maguire—returning to haunt his former club—rose highest to nod the ball home. But was he offside? Replays suggested he was, but without VAR in this stage of the FA Cup, the decision was left solely to the on-field officials. The goal stood, and Leicester were left devastated.
Van Nistelrooy didn’t hold back in his post-match interview, calling the decision "unthinkable at this level." He pointed out that Maguire was "half a metre offside," a call that VAR would likely have overturned. Leicester fans will feel hard done by, especially after such a valiant performance.
On the other hand, Amorim admitted United were lucky with the call but insisted his team deserved the win. He praised Garnacho's impact and acknowledged the importance of VAR in ensuring fairness in football.
While United march on in the FA Cup, Leicester are left to pick up the pieces. This one will sting for Van Nistelrooy, who knows all too well about United’s knack for late drama—but this time, he was on the wrong side of it.
