Mariners Sign Slugger Rowdy Tellez in a Low-Risk, High-Reward Move
The Seattle Mariners have made an interesting addition to their roster, signing former Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers slugger Rowdy Tellez to a minor league deal with an invite to MLB camp. At just 29 years old, Tellez is looking for a fresh start after an up-and-down 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Tellez has always been known for his power at the plate. His best season came in 2022 when he launched 35 home runs for the Brewers. Over seven major league seasons, he has racked up 105 homers, proving that when he's locked in, he can be a real threat in the lineup. While his batting average sits at a career .234 with a .303 on-base percentage, his raw power makes him an intriguing option for the Mariners, who could use more pop in their lineup.
Seattle's offense is currently centered around stars like Julio RodrÃguez and Cal Raleigh, but Tellez could carve out a role at first base alongside Luke Raley and Donovan Solano. He also provides depth at designated hitter, especially if he can rediscover his form from a few seasons ago. The Mariners finished last season 85-77, missing the playoffs by just one game, so every little improvement counts.
This signing isn’t a guaranteed game-changer, but it’s the kind of low-risk, high-reward move that could pay off if Tellez finds his groove. He’s shown flashes of being an impact hitter before, and Seattle is giving him the chance to prove he still belongs in the big leagues. If he impresses during spring training, he could force his way onto the Opening Day roster. If not, he’ll provide solid depth in Triple-A Tacoma. Either way, the Mariners are making a smart, cost-effective bet on a player with undeniable power.
