Matildas Fight Hard but Fall Short Against USA in SheBelieves Cup
The Matildas put up a brave fight against the world’s top-ranked team, the USA, in their second match of the 2025 SheBelieves Cup, but ultimately fell short with a 2-1 defeat. While the result wasn’t what they had hoped for, their performance was a huge improvement from their previous 4-0 loss to Japan.
It was a nightmare start for Australia as the USA struck just 41 seconds into the game. Lynn Biyendolo stunned the Matildas with an early goal, setting an intense tone for the match. However, instead of crumbling under the pressure, the Australians regrouped and showed resilience, pushing back against the reigning Olympic champions.
The game remained competitive throughout the first half, with the Matildas creating chances but struggling to break through the American defense. The USA made a bold move in the 60th minute, bringing in four fresh substitutes, which immediately shifted the momentum in their favor. Michelle Cooper capitalized on this tactical change, doubling the USA’s lead with just over 20 minutes to go.

But Australia wasn’t done yet. In the 80th minute, veteran striker Michelle Heyman delivered a crucial goal, heading in a brilliant cross from Hayley Raso. That goal ignited a late surge from the Matildas, who pushed hard for an equalizer in the dying moments of the game. Goalkeeper Teagan Micah played a crucial role in keeping the Australians in the fight, pulling off back-to-back saves in the final minutes. However, despite their best efforts, the Matildas couldn’t find the second goal they needed to level the score.
Speaking after the match, Heyman emphasized the team’s determination, saying, “We wanted to bring that never-say-die attitude. The US is the best in the world, and we gave it our all.” Interim head coach Tom Sermanni echoed her sentiments, praising the team’s effort and attitude, particularly after their disappointing performance against Japan.
One of the key takeaways from the game was the standout performance of goalkeeper Teagan Micah. With Mackenzie Arnold still working her way back to full fitness, Micah made a strong case to claim the Matildas’ number-one spot, showcasing her skills against one of the toughest teams in the world.
Although the Matildas couldn’t secure the win, their fighting spirit and improved performance show promise for the rest of the tournament. With lessons learned from this game, they’ll be looking to bounce back stronger in their next challenge.
