New Zealand Crush Pakistan in Champions Trophy Opener with Latham & Young's Stunning Tons
What a start to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025! New Zealand has sent a strong message to the cricketing world by dominating Pakistan in the tournament opener. The Black Caps outclassed the defending champions with a convincing 60-run victory in Karachi, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting tournament.
After being put in to bat, New Zealand didn't have the ideal start, losing three early wickets, including the prized scalp of Kane Williamson for just one run. But from there, it was all about Will Young and Tom Latham. Young, playing in place of the injured Rachin Ravindra, took his chance with both hands. He played a mature and calculated innings, building his way to a fantastic 107 off 113 balls. Latham, on the other hand, started cautiously but accelerated beautifully, eventually finishing unbeaten on 118 off 104 balls. The duo’s partnership of 118 runs steadied the ship, and then came the Glenn Phillips show. He blasted a quickfire 61 off just 39 balls, ensuring New Zealand posted a formidable 320/5 in 50 overs.

Pakistan's chase got off to a nightmare start. Struggling with the required run rate, they found themselves at 22/2 in the powerplay, with Muhammad Rizwan departing early thanks to a stunning one-handed catch by Glenn Phillips. Babar Azam, Pakistan’s captain and key batter, tried to anchor the innings with a composed 64 off 90 balls, but the slow start meant the required run rate kept climbing. Salman Agha brought some life into the chase with an aggressive 42 off 28 balls, but his dismissal halted Pakistan’s momentum. The real fireworks came from Khushdil Shah, who fought bravely with a 69 off 49 balls, clearing the ropes with ease. However, the damage had already been done.
New Zealand’s bowling attack was clinical. Will O’Rourke led from the front with figures of 3/47, while Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry ensured Pakistan never got back into the game. Despite some late resistance from the lower order, Pakistan was bowled out for 260 in the 48th over, falling short by 60 runs.
Speaking after the game, Pakistan’s captain Mohammad Rizwan admitted that they were caught off guard by New Zealand’s target. "We didn’t expect them to get 320. We started too slowly, and that cost us. We have to learn from our mistakes before the next match." On the other hand, New Zealand’s hero, Tom Latham, praised his teammates, saying, "Young played brilliantly, and we paced our innings perfectly. Phillips gave us the momentum we needed, and our bowlers executed the plan well."
With this win, New Zealand has gained an early advantage in Group A, while Pakistan now faces a do-or-die clash against India in their next match. Can they bounce back? Only time will tell, but for now, the Black Caps have made a huge statement in this tournament!
