Oklahoma Lands NFL Veteran Jim Nagy as General Manager for Football
Big news out of Norman—Oklahoma has officially hired Jim Nagy as the new General Manager for football. This is a massive move for the Sooners, bringing in a seasoned NFL executive with an incredible resume to help build a championship-caliber roster. If you’ve followed college football’s rapid evolution, you know how crucial this kind of leadership role has become. And with Nagy stepping in, Oklahoma is making a bold statement about its future.
So, who is Jim Nagy? If you’re a football fan, his name should ring a bell. With 18 years of experience in NFL front offices, he’s been part of multiple Super Bowl-winning teams, working with organizations like the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, and Kansas City Chiefs. Most recently, he’s been the Executive Director of the Senior Bowl since 2018, helping showcase the top college football talent for the NFL Draft. Under his leadership, the Senior Bowl has become a powerhouse, producing over 100 drafted players per year, including first-round standouts. His ability to evaluate, recruit, and develop top-tier talent is exactly what Oklahoma needs right now.
Now, what does this mean for the Sooners? Brent Venables, OU’s head coach, is fully embracing a progressive approach to roster management, and Nagy will play a critical role. He’ll be responsible for player recruitment, evaluation, retention, and even handling challenges like NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness), the transfer portal, and scholarship allocations. Essentially, he’s bringing an NFL-style approach to college football—a move that could set Oklahoma apart in this new era of player movement and compensation.

The Sooners have struggled in recent years, recording losing seasons in two of Venables’ first three years as head coach. But with Nagy coming in, there’s real hope that Oklahoma can turn things around. His deep ties across college football and the NFL will be invaluable, helping OU not just recruit top talent but also develop players into legitimate pro prospects.
OU Vice President and Athletic Director Joe Castiglione made it clear—this hire is about staying ahead of the game. College football is changing fast, and Oklahoma wants to lead the charge rather than play catch-up. Randall Stephenson, who will oversee Nagy and Venables in his role as Chair of Football, emphasized that the sport requires innovative leadership to manage contracts, revenue sharing, and player recruitment. And in Nagy, they believe they have the right person to handle it all.
This move also comes after the departure of Curtis Lofton, a former Sooner standout who briefly served as GM before stepping down to pursue a ministry role. Nagy is stepping into a position that Oklahoma is redefining—a front-office role in college football that mirrors what we see in the NFL.
Nagy himself is excited about the opportunity, calling it “a new era in intercollegiate athletics at one of the greatest college football programs in the country.” He knows the expectations are high, but with his experience and relationships, he’s confident that OU can build something special.
Bottom line—this is a huge win for Oklahoma. With Nagy’s NFL pedigree, scouting expertise, and recruiting connections, the Sooners are setting themselves up for sustained success. Now, all eyes are on Norman to see how this new structure plays out on the field. Buckle up, Sooner Nation—things are about to get interesting.
