OPP Urges Residents to Stay Home as Winter Storm Batters Southern Ontario

Hey everyone, if you're in southern Ontario right now, you’re probably seeing just how intense this winter storm has become. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is strongly advising everyone to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary. Roads are covered in ice and snow, visibility is poor, and conditions are expected to remain hazardous through the evening.

Earlier today, Environment Canada issued a Winter Storm Warning for the entire region, warning of heavy snowfall rates of 2 to 3 centimeters per hour , along with strong winds causing blowing snow and dangerously reduced visibility. If you're out on the roads, it's going to be extremely difficult to drive safely, so please avoid unnecessary travel.

Hamilton has officially declared a "significant weather event," meaning snow removal efforts will take longer than usual. The city is asking residents to park in driveways if possible to allow plows to clear the streets. With another 5 to 10 centimeters of snow expected, this storm is piling onto what’s already fallen over the past week.

Public services are also being affected. Municipal programs, recreation centers, arenas, and museums are closed , and transit services are delayed. Even Hamilton International Airport has reported flight cancellations and delays. If you have travel plans, check with your airline before heading out.

The city has also issued a Cold Weather Alert, as temperatures are expected to drop below -15°C with wind chills making it feel like -20°C or colder. If you must go outside, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and be cautious of frostbite.

Emergency officials are reminding everyone to prepare for possible power outages and have an emergency kit ready, including food, water, flashlights, and extra blankets.

So, the bottom line? Stay home if you can, keep warm, and stay safe. If you do need to go out, take extreme caution, drive carefully, and keep your headlights on. Let’s get through this storm together.
