Richard Petty Joins NASCAR Legends to Honor Sherry Pollex’s Legacy
This past weekend, something truly special happened in the NASCAR world. Racing legend Richard Petty, along with fellow seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, attended the grand opening of the SherryStrong Integrative Wellness Center at AdventHealth Daytona Beach. This wasn't just any ribbon-cutting ceremony—it was a celebration of a powerful legacy left behind by Sherry Pollex , a fierce advocate for cancer patients and a well-known figure in the NASCAR community.
Sherry Pollex dedicated her life to helping those battling cancer. She believed that healing is about more than just medicine—it’s about caring for the whole person, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. That’s exactly what the new SherryStrong Integrative Wellness Center aims to provide. Thanks to nearly $2 million in fundraising , including a $1.25 million donation from the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation , this center will offer free holistic therapies like oncology massage, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, nutritional counseling, and support groups to cancer patients and their families.
This initiative is deeply personal for NASCAR fans and those who knew Sherry. She spent nearly a decade fighting ovarian cancer and used her platform to advocate for others facing similar battles. Sadly, she passed away in September 2023 at the age of 44, but her mission continues through this wellness center.

At the grand opening, veteran sports reporter Holly Cain shared how she was “literally moved to tears” by the event. NASCAR on FOX’s Kaitlyn Vincie , a close friend of Sherry, spoke about how proud she would have been to see her vision come to life. And, of course, seeing Richard Petty and Jimmie Johnson in attendance added even more weight to the moment. Their presence was a testament to how much impact Sherry had, not just in the NASCAR community but in the fight against cancer.
Dr. John Reilly , a radiation oncologist at the AdventHealth Daytona Beach Cancer Institute, highlighted how integrative therapies can improve quality of life, reduce stress, and help patients regain strength. This approach to whole-person care has already made a difference at the first SherryStrong location in North Carolina, which opened in 2020. Now, with the Daytona Beach center up and running, even more patients will benefit from these life-changing therapies.
One of the most touching moments of the event was the unveiling of a memorial honoring Sherry’s life and work . It’s a permanent tribute that will serve as a reminder of her resilience, kindness, and determination to help others. As Lisa Backer , executive director of the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation, put it: “Sherry inspired so many with her strength and ‘never give up’ mentality. This center embodies her vision of holistic, patient-centered care.”
The NASCAR community has always been more than just a sport—it’s a family. Seeing legends like Richard Petty and Jimmie Johnson show up for Sherry’s legacy proves just how deep that bond runs. This wellness center isn’t just about fighting cancer; it’s about carrying forward a mission of hope, healing, and support for those who need it most.
Sherry Pollex’s fight may be over, but her impact is far from finished.
