Shocking Loss: Big S Passes Away Due to Flu-Related Pneumonia
The entertainment industry and fans across Asia are in shock following the sudden passing of Taiwanese actress and singer Barbie Hsu, widely known as "Big S" (徐熙媛). According to reports, she contracted the flu while on a family trip to Japan, which then developed into severe pneumonia. Despite medical efforts, she tragically succumbed to the illness at the age of 48.
Her younger sister, Dee Hsu (小S), confirmed the heartbreaking news earlier today, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of her "most beloved and kind-hearted sister." The news has left fans reeling, as Big S had always been known for her elegance, strength, and vibrant presence in the entertainment world.
Medical experts have weighed in on her sudden deterioration, noting that while flu-related complications are rare in middle-aged individuals with no significant underlying conditions, extreme fatigue and weakened immunity can increase the risk. Dr. Su Yifeng, a pulmonary specialist, recalled cases from past flu seasons where severe pneumonia led to complete lung failure, requiring intubation, ventilators, and even ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) support. Though such cases have become less common in recent years, they still pose a threat, particularly when symptoms such as severe breathlessness, confusion, abnormal heart rate, or fluctuating blood pressure arise. These warning signs, he stressed, should never be ignored.

Big S was known to have mitral valve prolapse and a history of epilepsy, but doctors believe these conditions were not significant risk factors for flu-related complications. Generally, individuals at higher risk for severe flu complications include those with chronic heart and lung diseases, diabetes, kidney failure, or weakened liver function.
As news of her passing spread, public attention also turned to her ex-husband, businessman Wang Xiaofei, and his mother, Zhang Lan. While Wang quickly traveled to Taiwan to assist with funeral arrangements and discuss custody matters for their children, Zhang’s reaction drew criticism. Shortly after the tragic news broke, she was seen smiling and discussing business on social media, prompting backlash from netizens and even public figures. Actress Mu Tingting openly condemned her behavior, questioning how someone could be so indifferent to a tragic loss. Facing intense criticism, Zhang later removed the controversial post.
Meanwhile, Wang Xiaofei’s social media activity also sparked discussion. He reportedly changed his profile picture multiple times within a few hours—from a black image to a picture with his daughter and back to black—raising speculation about whether he was more focused on public perception than mourning his ex-wife’s passing. Despite their past legal disputes, many expected a more solemn and respectful response.
Big S's untimely departure marks the end of an era for many fans who grew up watching her performances. From her iconic role in Meteor Garden to her work in music, film, and television, she was an influential figure in the Asian entertainment industry. Her passing is a painful reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of taking even seemingly mild illnesses seriously.
As arrangements for her farewell are being finalized, fans and loved ones continue to mourn the loss of a star whose light shone brightly but was extinguished far too soon. May she rest in peace.
