For fans of British punk and new wave, Buckler’s contribution to music history is undeniable. As part of The Jam, he played a crucial role in defining the band's energetic and tight sound, driving hits like Going Underground and A Town Called Malice to the top of the UK charts. From their debut in 1977 to their disbandment in 1982, The Jam achieved an incredible 18 consecutive UK Top 40 singles, cementing their place as one of Britain’s most influential bands.
Paul Weller took to social media to share his memories of Buckler, reflecting on their early days rehearsing in his bedroom in Woking and their journey from playing small pub gigs to becoming one of the most significant bands of their era. “We went far beyond our dreams, and what we made stands the test of time,” Weller wrote. Bruce Foxton echoed the sentiment, calling Buckler a "great drummer" whose innovative patterns helped shape the band's music.
After The Jam split, Buckler continued his musical career, playing in various bands, including From The Jam, a group that featured Foxton and focused on keeping The Jam’s music alive. Outside of performing, he also worked in production and later became an author, sharing his experiences in books about his time in The Jam.
Tributes have poured in from across the music industry, with many recognizing Buckler’s impact on British music. Rhoda Dakar, lead singer of The Bodysnatchers, praised him as a "bloody good drummer," reminding fans to cherish every moment in life.
Though his drumming days are over, Buckler’s legacy will continue to resonate through the timeless music of The Jam. His beats, his energy, and his contribution to British rock will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, Rick.
