Tragic Shark Attack Claims Life of Teenage Swimmer at Bribie Island, Australia
A heartbreaking incident occurred on Monday, February 3, 2025, off the coast of Bribie Island, Queensland, where a teenage swimmer tragically lost her life following a shark attack. Authorities were alerted around 5 p.m. local time when a swimmer was reportedly bitten by a shark near Woorim Beach, a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Despite quick efforts by paramedics and the community, the young woman, who was later identified as a 17-year-old girl, succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The attack took place approximately 100 meters from the shore, and the victim was swimming at the time of the incident. Witnesses recalled seeing the swimmer struggle after being bitten on the arm, and emergency responders rushed to assist. However, despite their swift actions, the injuries to her upper body proved to be fatal.

The area where the attack occurred is no stranger to shark sightings, with sharks commonly spotted in the waters surrounding Bribie Island. Still, the proximity to the shore left many shocked by the tragedy. Local resident Christopher Potter expressed his disbelief, stating that although the region is known for shark activity, an attack this close to shore was a devastating surprise. Authorities were quick to implement safety measures, including the use of drumlines in the area to mitigate shark risks, but the victim’s tragic fate underscores the unpredictable dangers posed by these marine creatures.
The Queensland Premier, David Crisafulli, called the incident an "unimaginable tragedy," extending his deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and the local community. The Premier also expressed gratitude to the first responders who worked tirelessly at the scene. As investigations continue, police confirmed that the report will be forwarded to the coroner for further examination. This loss marks the second shark fatality in Australian waters in 2025, the first occurring off the coast of South Australia earlier in January.
Shark attacks, while rare, have a significant emotional impact on coastal communities, especially in regions where beachgoers regularly engage in aquatic activities. In Queensland, the state government reassures the public that most shark species are not a threat to people, and that such attacks are uncommon. However, as evidenced by this tragic event, the risk, though low, remains ever-present in certain areas.
