Trump Dismantles USAID—The Agency His Daughter Once Championed
It’s quite a turn of events—Donald Trump is gutting the very agency that his daughter, Ivanka Trump, once worked hard to promote. Back in 2019, during his first term, Trump stood before the nation in his State of the Union address and unveiled a major initiative within USAID, aimed at empowering women in developing countries. It was a big deal, and Ivanka was at the forefront of it. The program, called the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative (W-GDP) , was supposed to uplift women worldwide through economic empowerment. But now, six years later, Trump is slashing nearly all foreign assistance, and USAID is on the chopping block.
The decision has sent shockwaves through communities around the world—especially for those who once saw Ivanka as a symbol of hope. Take Nino Zambakhidze , a Georgian farmer who benefited from the initiative. She recalls being invited to the Oval Office, standing alongside Ivanka Trump as the program was launched. With USAID’s support, she built a successful farm despite being turned away by multiple banks simply because she was a woman. Now, with the program being dismantled, she’s left wondering, What happened?

The situation is even more frustrating for USAID employees. Many who worked closely on these initiatives now find themselves in limbo. A federal judge recently intervened to temporarily halt the administration’s plans to force them back to the U.S., but the uncertainty remains. One USAID staffer put it bluntly—people who had real hope for the future now feel abandoned.
What’s interesting is that Trump’s stance on USAID today is a complete 180 from his first term . Back then, he integrated foreign aid into his national security strategy, using it as a tool to counter the influence of global adversaries. His administration even expanded programs like W-GDP, recognizing that investing in women led to stronger, more stable societies. But now, he’s calling USAID a “tremendous fraud” and blaming it for wasting taxpayer money.
Even Melania Trump once championed USAID during her 2018 visit to Africa. She praised its programs, distributed school supplies, and emphasized how American investments in education could create stronger societies. Fast forward to today, and those same programs are being gutted.
The real question is: Why the sudden shift? Some point to Trump’s broader push to slash government spending, while others see it as a move to align with conservative policy blueprints like Project 2025 , which aims to shrink U.S. foreign aid. Whatever the reason, the impact is undeniable—millions of women who once saw USAID as a gateway to economic independence are now left in uncertainty.
Will Trump reconsider and revive the initiative his daughter once spearheaded? Or is this the end of an era for U.S. global aid? Only time will tell.
