Why Elon Musk Brings His Children to Work
Elon Musk is known for making headlines, whether it’s about Tesla, SpaceX, or his recent political engagements. But one thing that continues to capture attention is his decision to bring his children along to important meetings, including those with world leaders. From the Oval Office to SpaceX control rooms, Musk’s kids have been a regular presence, sparking both curiosity and debate.
Most notably, his four-year-old son, X Æ A-12—affectionately called "Lil X"—was seen perched on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office while Musk met with Donald Trump. Later, he and two of his siblings exchanged gifts with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while their father discussed technology and innovation. This isn’t a one-time occurrence. Over the years, Musk’s children have accompanied him to major events, including meetings with the Turkish president, a memorial service at Auschwitz, and even the Time Magazine ceremony where he was named Person of the Year in 2021.

So, why does Musk bring his children along? Some experts believe it’s a calculated move to make him appear more relatable. Kurt Braddock, a professor of public communication, suggests that this could be a strategic way to soften Musk’s image, making him seem more personable to the public. Others, like communication consultant Jon Haber, argue that Musk’s children create a distraction—one that benefits both Musk and Trump by shifting focus away from controversies.
However, not everyone agrees with this approach. Musk’s ex-girlfriend Grimes, the mother of Lil X, has openly criticized him for putting their child in the spotlight. After seeing her son in the Oval Office, she posted on social media, "He should not be in public like this... but I'm glad he was polite. Sigh." She has previously expressed concerns about Musk treating X as a "protégé" rather than allowing him a normal childhood.
Despite the criticism, Musk seems deeply committed to having his children around. Biographer Walter Isaacson even described Musk as "obsessed" with his kids, saying he enjoys their company just as much as he enjoys his work.
Ultimately, whether this is a personal choice or a strategic move, Musk’s children have become a visible part of his public life, making them almost as newsworthy as their billionaire father.
