Avalanche Edge Canadiens in Thrilling Shootout Comeback
What a wild game in Montreal! The Colorado Avalanche seemed to have it all under control, leading 4-1 in the third period, only to see the Montreal Canadiens storm back with three unanswered goals to force overtime. But in the end, it was the Avalanche who regrouped and clinched a thrilling 5-4 victory in the shootout, thanks to Brock Nelson’s clutch performance.
The Avalanche came out strong, controlling the game from the start. Sam Malinski opened the scoring with a powerful one-timer in the first period, and Ryan Lindgren doubled the lead shortly after. Colorado kept the momentum going into the second period, extending their advantage to 3-0 with a power-play goal from Martin Necas.

Montreal, however, refused to back down. Juraj Slafkovsky gave the Canadiens life by deflecting Jayden Struble’s shot past Mackenzie Blackwood to cut the deficit to 3-1. But Nelson, proving to be a force for Colorado, responded in the third period by tipping in a Devon Toews shot, restoring the Avalanche’s three-goal cushion at 4-1.
That’s when the Canadiens flipped the script. Joshua Roy ignited the comeback at 9:24 of the third, burying a rebound to make it 4-2. Just 30 seconds later, Slafkovsky struck again, firing a wrist shot past Blackwood to bring Montreal within one. The Bell Centre erupted when Christian Dvorak completed the comeback at 13:32 with a brilliant backhand goal, tying the game 4-4 and sending it into overtime.
Montreal had their chances in the extra frame but couldn’t capitalize, even after killing off a penalty. Then came the shootout, where Nelson stepped up once again. Taking advice from teammate Jonathan Drouin, Nelson executed a move that beat Sam Montembeault in the fourth round, securing the win for Colorado.
Despite the loss, the Canadiens showed their resilience, earning a crucial point in the tight playoff race. With this result, Montreal remains in the hunt for a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, proving they are never out of a game. Meanwhile, Colorado continues their strong push in the Central Division, showing they can battle through adversity and still come out on top.
Hockey fans couldn’t have asked for a more exciting showdown. This game had everything—goals, drama, and a spectacular comeback—only to be settled by a single moment of brilliance in the shootout. If this is a preview of what’s to come in the playoffs, we’re in for an incredible ride!
