BCCI May Lift Saliva Ban for IPL 2025 – A Game-Changing Move?
Hey everyone, here’s a big update from the world of cricket! The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering bringing back the use of saliva on the ball for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Now, this is a huge shift from the current rules, and if it happens, it could even influence the International Cricket Council (ICC) to rethink its stance.
For those who might not remember, the use of saliva was banned during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent any health risks. The ICC made this rule permanent in 2022, meaning cricketers had to rely solely on sweat to shine the ball. But now, with the pandemic behind us, the BCCI is thinking about allowing players to use saliva again—at least in the IPL.

This topic will be discussed in an upcoming meeting in Mumbai with all IPL team captains. A BCCI official stated that while the impact of saliva is more significant in red-ball cricket, even a slight advantage in white-ball cricket can make a difference. And let’s not forget—IPL is a trend-setting tournament, so if this rule is changed here, we might see similar discussions at the international level.
Several fast bowlers, including Mohammed Shami, Vernon Philander, and Tim Southee, have previously supported the use of saliva, as it helps maintain reverse swing and keeps the balance between bat and ball. If the ban is lifted, it could add a new dimension to the game, making it even more exciting for both players and fans.
But that’s not all! Another key decision on the table is the use of the Decision Review System (DRS) for wide balls, including those for height and width outside the off-stump. If this gets approved, teams will be able to challenge wide calls using Hawk-Eye and ball-tracking technology. This could significantly improve the accuracy of umpiring decisions, making the game fairer and more competitive.
With IPL 2025 just around the corner, these changes could bring a fresh dynamic to the tournament. Will the BCCI go ahead with these updates? How will the captains respond? And if the saliva ban is lifted, will the ICC follow suit?
Stay tuned for more updates, and let me know—do you think lifting the saliva ban is a good idea? Drop your thoughts!
