Canucks Edge Devils in Thrilling Shootout Victory

What a game! The Vancouver Canucks pulled off a dramatic 4-3 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils, securing two critical points in their playoff push. It was an action-packed night, filled with late-game heroics, clutch saves, and a thrilling finish that had fans on the edge of their seats.

The game started strong for Vancouver, with Pius Suter drawing first blood. He snapped one home after a well-executed faceoff play, giving the Canucks a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. But the Devils weren’t going down easy. Timo Meier got one back for New Jersey on the power play in the second period, leveling the score at 1-1.

The third period was absolute chaos. Meier struck again, briefly giving the Devils the lead before Jonathan Lekkerimäki responded in style, ripping a quick shot through traffic to even things up. Then, just when it seemed like the Canucks had momentum, Erik Haula put New Jersey back on top. But Vancouver wasn’t done yet. With the goalie pulled and time winding down, Quinn Hughes blasted one from the blue line, and Conor Garland was there to jam it in, forcing overtime with just 36 seconds left on the clock.

Overtime didn’t settle anything, leading to a tense shootout. Jesper Bratt converted for New Jersey, but Thatcher Demko stood tall, shutting the door on the Devils’ next three shooters. Meanwhile, Jake DeBrusk found twine for Vancouver, and in the clutch moment, 20-year-old Lekkerimäki delivered once again, scoring the game-winner and sending the Canucks to victory.

Demko, making his first start since February 8th, was solid, stopping 22 of 25 shots and keeping his team in the fight. He acknowledged the challenge of returning but was thrilled with the win. “It’s been tough watching the boys push through this playoff race, so I just wanted to contribute in a positive way. Getting it to overtime and winning in the shootout is huge for us,” he said postgame.

Quinn Hughes was also a force, logging an astonishing 31:38 of ice time—setting a new career high. His leadership and skill were on full display, and Demko couldn’t praise his captain enough. “He’s one of our best players every night. His play drives this team, and we’re all riding his energy.”

With this win, the Canucks are now halfway through their six-game road trip. Up next, they stay in New York for a showdown against the Islanders on Wednesday. If they bring the same energy and determination, this road trip could be a massive boost to their playoff hopes. Stay tuned—this team is heating up at just the right time!
