Dan Burn’s journey to the England squad is nothing short of a football fairytale. From being released by Newcastle United’s academy at 11 to pushing supermarket trolleys as a teenager, Burn’s rise is a testament to perseverance and determination. Burn’s story is not your typical footballer’s tale. His path was filled with obstacles, starting with the heartbreak of being let go by his beloved Newcastle. Instead of giving up, he took the long road through non-league football with Blyth Spartans before earning a youth contract with League Two side Darlington in 2009. It wasn’t glamorous—washing his own kit, bringing packed lunches, and commuting with teammates in a small Peugeot 206 while scraping together petrol money. But through sheer determination, he impressed enough to secure a move to Fulham at just 18.
However, life at Fulham was not straightforward. Loan spells at Yeovil Town and Birmingham City followed before a move to Wigan Athletic. It wasn’t until he joined Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018 that he found stability in the Premier League, and eventually, a long-awaited return to Newcastle in 2022 for £13 million. Since then, he has become a vital figure in Eddie Howe’s squad, making over 100 Premier League appearances.

His dedication finally paid off when new England manager Thomas Tuchel handed him a call-up, making him the oldest debutant since Kevin Davies in 2010. The moment was surreal—Burn recalled receiving a late-night FaceTime from Tuchel, who jokingly called him “unprofessional” for not being in bed before 10 PM. It was a lighthearted but defining moment, signaling his arrival on the international stage.
Burn’s resilience has made him a fan favorite, particularly in his hometown of Blyth, where messages of congratulations have flooded in. His father, who once wrote a heartfelt letter celebrating his son’s journey from rejection to the top level, was among the thousands celebrating Newcastle’s recent Carabao Cup victory, where Burn scored the opening goal.
Reflecting on his career, Burn admits he has often been overlooked. But he has never wavered in his belief. “I feel like I’ve been doubted a lot over my career. But I know what I’m good at. Not many people at Darlington would have thought I’d be here, playing for England,” he said.
As he prepares for his potential England debut, Burn remains humble yet determined. “Every kid dreams of playing in a World Cup. I don’t want to just be here as a cheerleader—I want to play.” And given his journey, it’s hard to bet against him.
