Did the Avalanche Make the Right Call Trading Rantanen? The Answer Seems Clear
When the Colorado Avalanche shocked the hockey world by trading star winger Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes at the end of January, many fans and analysts were left scratching their heads. How could they part ways with a key player, a Stanley Cup winner, and one of their most productive forwards? The answer was simple but brutal—uncertainty. Rantanen was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and Colorado’s front office, led by GM Chris MacFarland and president Joe Sakic, made the tough call that they likely couldn’t afford to keep him under their salary cap structure.
Now, just weeks later, the decision is looking smarter by the day. Carolina, despite acquiring Rantanen with high hopes, has yet to secure him on a long-term contract extension. With less than 24 hours remaining before the NHL trade deadline, rumors are swirling that the Hurricanes might have to flip him again—meaning he could be traded twice in the same season. That would’ve been unthinkable just a few months ago, yet here we are.

Even with the NHL’s salary cap expected to rise significantly in the next few years, locking in a Rantanen extension could cost around $14 million per season over eight years. That’s a price tag that only a handful of teams are willing—or even able—to take on. Now, the Hurricanes face a tough choice: push hard to get a deal done with Rantanen before the summer or cut their losses and try to recoup the assets they gave up to acquire him from Colorado. Either way, it reinforces that the Avalanche made the right move, as painful as it was to let go of such a talented player.
The Avs, meanwhile, have given themselves much-needed financial flexibility. Even if they don’t make another big splash before the trade deadline, they’re now in a prime position to be major players in free agency this offseason. And in a league where financial maneuvering is just as important as on-ice performance, flexibility is everything.
Of course, losing a player of Rantanen’s caliber isn’t easy, but Colorado softened the blow by acquiring Martin Nečas in the deal. While Nečas isn’t at Rantanen’s level, he’s an above-average forward who can contribute immediately. More importantly, the trade opens the door for the Avs to land another star forward in the near future, thanks to the cap space they’ve freed up.
Hockey is a business, and tough decisions have to be made. While some Avalanche fans were disappointed to see Rantanen go, it’s becoming clearer that MacFarland and Sakic were thinking ahead, making a decision that serves the long-term success of the team. Betting on Rantanen taking a discount to stay in Colorado would have been risky—especially when his market value is skyrocketing. By moving on from him now, the Avalanche ensured they wouldn’t be left scrambling to fit him under the cap or, worse, losing him for nothing in free agency.
As the trade deadline looms and the Hurricanes scramble to make a decision on Rantanen, Avalanche fans should feel confident that their team’s front office played this situation perfectly. It may not have been the popular move at the time, but in hindsight, it was absolutely the right one.
