Eagles Release Six-Time Pro Bowl CB Darius Slay in Major Roster Move
Big news coming out of Philadelphia today—the Eagles are parting ways with one of their defensive cornerstones, Darius Slay. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport broke the news that the six-time Pro Bowl cornerback is being released, signaling a significant shift for the defending Super Bowl champions.
Slay, 34, has been a key piece of the Eagles’ secondary since joining the team in 2020 after a successful seven-year run with the Detroit Lions. Known for his elite coverage skills and veteran leadership, he played a crucial role in the Eagles' defensive schemes. However, with salary cap concerns looming and a need to retain younger talent, the front office made the difficult decision to move on. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the move—if designated post-June 1—will save the team $4.3 million against the cap.

This is a business decision, no doubt. The Eagles have multiple free agents to consider, including linebacker Zack Baun, defensive tackle Milton Williams, edge-rusher Josh Sweat, and offensive lineman Mekhi Becton. With limited cap space, tough choices had to be made, and unfortunately, Slay became a cap casualty.
Looking back at Slay’s career, he has been one of the league’s most consistent shutdown corners. Over 177 games, he has racked up 619 tackles, 28 interceptions, and three defensive touchdowns. Even last season, despite playing in only 14 games, he remained a reliable force in the secondary. However, it was also the first season since his rookie year in which he didn’t record an interception, perhaps signaling that the Eagles were looking to get younger at the position.
So, what’s next for Slay? At 34, he’s still a talented player with a lot to offer. Contending teams in need of a veteran corner will likely be reaching out. Could a reunion with the Lions be in the cards? Or maybe a team like the Cowboys or Chiefs will see him as the missing piece in their secondary? Either way, expect Slay to be a hot name on the free-agent market.
For the Eagles, this marks a new chapter. They’ll likely look to the draft or free agency to fill the gap left by Slay’s departure. It’s never easy saying goodbye to a fan favorite, but in the ever-evolving NFL, tough decisions are part of the game.
Stay tuned—this offseason is just getting started.
