Elton John Breaks Down in Tears While Reflecting on Mortality
Imagine being in a recording studio, pouring your heart into a song, and suddenly being hit with a wave of emotion so strong that you can’t hold back the tears. That’s exactly what happened to music legend Sir Elton John as he marked his 78th birthday. The iconic singer revealed that he broke down for a full 45 minutes while recording a track for his upcoming album, overwhelmed by thoughts about his own mortality.
Elton shared this deeply personal moment on the SmartLess podcast, describing how he was working on a song titled When This Old World Is Done With Me , written by his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. As he sang the chorus, the reality of the song’s message hit him hard—it was about his own eventual passing. He suddenly found himself thinking, How much time do I have left? At his age, he admitted, these thoughts have become more frequent. With a loving husband, two young children, and a legacy that spans decades, the weight of these emotions became too much to bear, and he let himself cry—something he says was all captured on film.

Elton’s vulnerability during this session was also witnessed by musician Brandi Carlile, who collaborated with him on his latest record, Who Believes in Angels? , set to be released on April 4. Brandi described the moment as raw and deeply human, saying that as soon as Elton reached the end of the chorus, his voice started to shake, and she knew he was about to break down.
This isn't the first time Sir Elton has expressed his fears about aging and health struggles. He has previously opened up about losing sight in his right eye due to an infection, leaving him with only limited vision in his left. Additionally, he admitted that he faced a crisis of confidence while working on this album, more so than any other time in his 50-year career.
The recording process itself was challenging. He entered the studio with no prepared material, which was a new and daunting experience for him. Initially, he struggled with self-doubt and frustration, even storming out at one point in what he later described as an “adrenaline crash.” However, with the support of Brandi, Bernie Taupin, and his producer Andrew Watt, Elton managed to push through, and the album ultimately came together in a way that he now calls his best work in four decades.
Looking back, Elton admits that he never envisioned himself as a global superstar. He started out in a small band, unsure of where his career would take him, but fate had other plans. Now, even as he grapples with the reality of time passing, his passion for music remains unwavering.
His fans will soon get to witness these emotional moments firsthand in his documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late , which captures the highs and lows of creating his latest album. While he may have completed his farewell tour in 2023, Elton John’s legacy is far from over. Through his music, his emotions, and his sheer love for the art, he continues to inspire millions around the world.
