Sunday morning, Montrealers can expect a brief period of snow before it transitions into a thin layer of ice pellets. By midday, freezing rain will likely coat surfaces, making travel difficult. Fortunately, the precipitation amounts are forecasted to remain manageable, with an expected 2 to 5 mm of ice accumulation. That said, even small amounts of ice can turn roads and sidewalks into dangerously slick surfaces. Pedestrians and drivers alike are urged to exercise caution.
Other regions in Quebec are also feeling the effects of this complex system. The Laurentides will experience prolonged freezing rain throughout the day, accumulating up to 10 mm of ice before temperatures rise slightly in the evening. Meanwhile, areas like Outaouais will see a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain in the morning before shifting to rain by the afternoon. Further north, in Mauricie and Quebec City, snowfall will dominate early in the afternoon, gradually mixing with sleet and eventually freezing rain by evening.
By Monday, a drastic shift in temperature is expected, with daytime highs reaching an unseasonably warm 16°C. However, this warmth won’t last, as another cold front is set to move in by the evening, dropping temperatures back to seasonal norms. This dramatic fluctuation could lead to further complications, including flash freezing on wet surfaces, increasing the risk of icy roads.
Montrealers should take necessary precautions to stay safe. If you must travel, plan ahead, allow extra time, and consider using public transportation where possible. Keeping salt or sand handy for driveways and sidewalks is also a good idea to reduce slipping hazards.
