Gaby Dabrowski’s Triumph: Beating Cancer and Winning on the Tennis Court
Imagine achieving the biggest victories of your career while quietly battling a life-changing health crisis. That’s exactly what Canadian tennis star Gaby Dabrowski did. She had a phenomenal 2024—winning an Olympic bronze medal in mixed doubles and clinching the season-ending WTA Finals. But what the world didn’t know was that she was fighting breast cancer the entire time.
Dabrowski kept her diagnosis private until New Year’s Eve, revealing that she had been diagnosed back in April. Her achievements suddenly became even more remarkable. At one point, just before the grass-court season, she couldn’t even toss the ball for her serve due to limited mobility in her left arm. She had to rely on her coach to throw it up for her. Yet, just months later, she stood on the podium in Paris, an Olympic medal around her neck, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Her journey is a testament to resilience. Even as she put further cancer treatment on hold to compete, she found unexpected joy on the court. “I really felt like it was such a cool thing to be able to play tennis as my profession,” she shared with CNN. Her success, she believes, came from a new mindset—focusing on the process, enjoying the game, and appreciating every moment.
The road to this perspective wasn’t easy. Dabrowski first discovered a lump in her breast in 2023, but a doctor reassured her it was nothing to worry about. It wasn’t until a routine WTA health screening months later that another doctor urged her to get it checked. What followed was a whirlwind of tests, a biopsy, and then the dreaded diagnosis.
Thankfully, the news wasn’t all bad. The cancer was caught early, meaning she didn’t need chemotherapy. But the experience forced her to reevaluate everything. She became more conscious of her health—adjusting her diet, sleep, and recovery process meticulously. More importantly, she no longer let her identity be defined by wins and losses.
Now, Dabrowski is using her story to spread awareness. She wants women to know that early detection is key—breast cancer has a 99% survival rate when caught early. Her journey has been about more than just survival; it’s been about finding purpose, joy, and a renewed love for the sport she’s dedicated her life to.
A year ago, she wasn’t sure if she’d ever play tennis again. Today, she’s not only back on the court but thriving, proving that resilience and positivity can lead to extraordinary success.
