Heathrow Airport Shuts Down Due to Fire-Induced Power Outage
Heathrow Airport, the busiest airport in the UK, has been forced to shut down completely following a massive fire at a nearby electrical substation. This unexpected closure is set to last until 23:59 today, causing significant travel disruptions for thousands of passengers.
The fire broke out at an electrical substation in Hayes, West London, leading to a widespread power outage that has crippled airport operations. In response, Heathrow officials have urged passengers to avoid traveling to the airport under any circumstances. Airlines have been scrambling to accommodate affected travelers, with many flights being redirected to alternative airports such as Gatwick, Manchester, and even major international hubs like Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

Flight tracking service Flightradar24 has reported that at least 1,351 flights to and from Heathrow are impacted, with hundreds of passengers left stranded as airlines attempt to reorganize schedules. Some incoming flights, including those from Doha, Bahrain, and Hong Kong, have already been diverted to various European airports.
British Airways, whose main hub is at Heathrow, has warned of a major disruption to its operations and has advised customers to seek updates directly from the airline. Other carriers, including United Airlines and Qantas, have also been forced to reroute flights or cancel scheduled departures. Meanwhile, Gatwick Airport has stepped in to provide support by accepting diverted flights where possible.
Beyond Heathrow, the fire has affected thousands of residents in the area, with around 16,300 homes experiencing power outages. Emergency services, including ten fire engines and more than 70 firefighters, are actively working to contain the fire. Officials have stated that the cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is underway.
For those stranded or impacted by this incident, airlines are working to rebook passengers, but the scale of disruption means delays and cancellations could persist for several days. As the situation unfolds, Heathrow Airport has promised to provide further updates as soon as more information on power restoration becomes available.
For now, travelers are urged to check with their airlines before heading to any airport and to stay informed as this unprecedented closure continues to cause a ripple effect across European and global travel networks.
