Horror on the Rails: The Pakistan Train Hijacking Unfolds
Imagine you're sitting on a train, heading home after a long journey, when suddenly, the ground beneath you shakes, an explosion rips through the tracks, and gunfire erupts. That’s exactly what happened to over 400 passengers aboard the Jaffar Express as it passed through Pakistan’s remote Bolan Pass. For over 30 hours, chaos, fear, and bloodshed reigned aboard the hijacked train.

Survivors described the terrifying moments as militants stormed the train, shouting orders and pulling people from their seats. One railway police officer, caught in the gunfire, recalled how he and his fellow officers initially tried to fight back. But outnumbered and outgunned, their ammunition quickly ran out, leaving them defenseless. The militants systematically separated passengers based on their ethnic backgrounds, deciding who would live and who would die.
Some passengers were allowed to leave, including women, children, and the elderly. But for many others, there was no escape. The militants, armed with rifles and suicide vests, executed several hostages in cold blood. Survivors, like Allahditta, witnessed their loved ones being gunned down before their eyes. “When someone is killed in front of you, you don’t know what to do,” he said, recalling the heartbreaking moment his cousin was executed despite pleading for his life.
As night fell, the terror continued. Those who tried to flee were shot on sight. But as dawn broke, Pakistani security forces launched a full-scale operation. With gunfire echoing through the mountains, the army and paramilitary troops stormed the train, engaging in a deadly battle with the insurgents. Military helicopters circled above as the rescue mission intensified. In the end, 300 passengers were freed, but at a devastating cost—dozens of militants, civilians, and security personnel lay dead.
Even after the siege was broken, the fate of many passengers remained uncertain. Conflicting reports suggested some hostages were taken into the mountains by the fleeing insurgents. The Pakistani military vowed to hunt down those responsible and bring them to justice, but for the survivors, the scars of this horrific ordeal will never fade.
