I Tried McDonald's Minecraft Happy Meal - Here's What Surprised Me
If you grew up in the early 2000s, you probably remember the sheer joy of opening a McDonald's Happy Meal—hot fries, a burger or nuggets, and of course, the toy. Now, McDonald’s is tapping into that nostalgia with an adult version of the Happy Meal, themed around the upcoming Minecraft movie. Naturally, I had to give it a try.
The Minecraft Movie Meal offers a choice between a Big Mac, nine McNuggets, or four veggie dippers, plus a side and a drink. The biggest draw? A limited-edition collectible toy designed with Minecraft’s signature blocky style. As someone who doesn’t play Minecraft but appreciates a good themed meal, I was curious to see if this was worth the hype—or just a gimmick.
I opted for the veggie dippers, fries, and a Diet Coke, along with the special 'Nether Flame Sauce'—a new addition to the menu. To complete the experience, I also ordered the Apple Cake McFlurry, which is inspired by the game.
First impressions? Something was missing—the box. One of the most iconic things about Happy Meals is the bright, fun packaging, and this meal didn’t come in one. Maybe it was because I ordered it through Uber Eats, but it definitely took away from the nostalgia factor.

Now, onto the food. The veggie dippers were a pleasant surprise—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, almost like arancini. The fries were standard McDonald’s fare, though I noticed they seemed less salty than before. But the biggest letdown? The Nether Flame Sauce. It was an overpowering mix of heat and vinegar, not complementing the food at all. I ended up tossing it aside after a few dips.
The McFlurry, however, was the real star of the meal. The apple sauce mixed with the soft-serve was perfectly balanced—sweet, tangy, and refreshing. Easily one of the best McFlurry flavors I’ve had in a while.
And then there was the toy. Meant to be ‘crafted for adults,’ it was just a blocky version of a McDonald’s item. Honestly, I was hoping for something more nostalgic—maybe a throwback to the plush toys or interactive gadgets of the past. While Minecraft fans might appreciate it, I personally found it underwhelming.
The price was another sticking point. At £8.19 for a medium meal, I compared it to a regular veggie dipper meal, which costs £6.59. Essentially, you’re paying extra for a toy and branding. For die-hard Minecraft fans, it might be worth it, but for me, the nostalgia factor alone didn’t justify the price.
Would I order it again? Probably not. The concept is fun, and I appreciate McDonald's bringing back the Happy Meal experience for adults, but the execution felt lacking. If they brought back classic toys and the signature Happy Meal box, it might have been a different story.
So, if you’re curious, go ahead and give it a try—but don’t expect it to fully capture the magic of childhood Happy Meals. And if you do, make sure you have a McFlurry ready to wash down that fiery Nether Flame Sauce!
