Lakers Struggle Continues as Magic Take Commanding Win
The Los Angeles Lakers are in trouble, and Luka Dončić knows it. After dropping yet another game, this time to the Orlando Magic, 118-106, Dončić took responsibility and acknowledged that he and LeBron James need to step up to turn things around. The Lakers have now lost seven of their last ten games, and with the playoffs approaching, the timing couldn't be worse.
Despite having a full roster back on the court, including James and Rui Hachimura, the Lakers' defense was nowhere to be found. Their struggles were evident, especially in the second half when they failed to contain Orlando's Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero. Both players had dominant performances, with Wagner scoring 32 points and Banchero adding 30. The Lakers’ lack of defensive intensity allowed the Magic to shoot nearly 50% from the field and secure a much-needed win.
Dončić, who led the Lakers with 32 points, reflected on the team's slump. "I think we need to go back to the way we played during that eight-game winning streak," he said. "We got a little too comfortable, and we can’t afford that. It’s on me and Bron to change that." His words emphasized the urgency of the situation, as the Lakers continue to slide down the standings.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the fatigue within the squad, citing the intense schedule and recent injuries as contributing factors. "Some guys just look tired," Redick said. "We weren’t able to maintain our level of intensity. That’s what it feels like right now." This was evident in their previous game, a 146-111 blowout loss to the Chicago Bulls, where their defensive issues were on full display.
The Lakers had initially gained momentum after acquiring Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks, stringing together an impressive winning streak. However, injuries, particularly to LeBron James, disrupted their rhythm. Since James' return, the Lakers have struggled to find their groove, and their defensive lapses have been glaring.
Dončić emphasized the need for better communication and consistency. "We played great defense in the first half, but then we let it slip. We have to maintain that energy for the full 48 minutes," he said. The Magic capitalized on the Lakers' lapses, especially in the third quarter, where they outscored Los Angeles 34-18, effectively sealing the game.
With just 11 games left in the regular season, the Lakers need to find answers quickly. They still hold a spot in the top eight of the Western Conference, but if their current form continues, their playoff hopes could be in jeopardy. Meanwhile, the Magic are making a late push in the Eastern Conference and now hold the eighth spot.
The road ahead for the Lakers is tough, but Dončić remains optimistic. "It’s up to us. We have to hold each other accountable," he stated. If the Lakers want to make a deep playoff run, they need to rediscover their defensive identity—and fast.
